WordPress vs Squarespace

I have known many a customer to question why they should use WordPress vs Squarespace, Wix, or Weebly. Well, finally a good article came to the fray from WPMUDev called “27 Reasons Why WordPress Crushes Squarespace Every Time“. If you are considering using a cheap hosted Content Management System like SquareSpace, Wix, or Weebly then this article is for you. It will give you a bird’s eye view of what your decision means for your website, because if you make a bad choice now it will most definitely cost you later. Amongst the multitude of reasons, I pulled out my top ten and summarized them for you below:

  1. WordPress can be hosted wherever you choose and moved elsewhere whenever you want. With Squarespace you are stuck with their hosting and themes which means you cannot migrate your website design elsewhere when you want to move away — you will have to completely rebuild the site when ready to move.
  2. WordPress allows for your site to be scaleable based on your hosting solution’s bandwidth. With Squarespace you are limited in bandwidth to “normal usage” even though they say you have unlimited bandwidth — which means if Squarespace decides you’re getting more than average amounts of traffic they can shut your site down.
  3. WordPress offers full customization with thousands of free or low-priced themes and 49,000 plugins. You can even have developers further customize either one, meaning you can add on as much design and functionality as you want. With Squarespace if a certain design (just 59 themes) or feature you need isn’t available, you’re out of luck.
  4. WordPress offers Multisite that allows you to create a network of websites using one installation of WordPress giving you access all in one place. Squarespace has no such feature.
  5. WordPress has no claim to publish any part of your site for free. Squarespace, on the other hand, according to its Terms of Service, statements 2.2 and 2.3, can use any part of your site for uses such as advertising, even if the content they take is copyrighted.

  6. WordPress has no eCommerce transaction fees while Squarespace charges additional transaction fees (3%, 2%, or none, depending on your plan) for each sale you make on top of the payment processor fees that get charged through Stripe/PayPal.
  7. WordPress does not limit your accepted currencies for sales whereas Squarespace limits you to USD, AUD, CAD, CHF, DKK, EUR, GBP, HKD, MXN, NOK, NZD, SEK, or SGD. This can be limiting, especially for an online store that wants to accept sales from all around the world.
  8. WordPress allows you to purchase your domain from anywhere whereas if you create a site with Squarespace and sign up for an annual billing plan to get a discount, you get a free domain through Squarespace. However, while the first year is free, every year thereafter is priced higher at $20/mo vs. other registrars who charge only $10/mo. Also WordPress does not limit the ownership of your domain whereas Squarespace (with your free domain) requires you to request from them to email Tucows Inc. to transfer ownership of the domain you purchased. Otherwise, it remains the legal property of Squarespace.
  9. WordPress offers full accessibility for disabled visitors that need screen readers to consume the content of your site. Squarespace’s site and most sites that are created on the platform can’t be considered fully accessible and cannot be modified to improve their accessibility.
  10. WordPress offers unlimited pages and contributors while Squarespace offers up to 20 pages and only two contributors on their Personal plan or you can upgrade to add more.
